A Perfect Evening
Everybody's idea of a perfect evening is a bit different, and tonite I came pretty close. Sat outside with the family in the shadows of the evening sun, eating a meal of salad and steak grilled to perfection. With it we enjoyed a glass of fine Warsteiner beer, imported from Germany. After dinner my Dad and I partook of Partagas mini cigars, Cuban tobacco which I brought home from Berlin. Next came a hot shower, followed by a night strolling around downtown Grand Rapids. The only thing I would add to my perfect evening would be a long walk on the beach with my girlfriend. I guess, seeing as I haven't got a girlfriend, that I would settle for just the walk. I haven't even been to the lakeshore this year yet.
I think it's a shame that beer gets a bad rap here in the US. In the sense that peoples' conception of it is either shirtless fat-bellied rednecks downing Bud Lights by the case while shooting raccoons from off the porch, or college fratties getting trashed and having unprotected pre-marital sex before vomiting and passing out on the pavement. I was able to enjoy several very good beers while in Berlin; the Berliner, Warsteiner, and Freiberger pilsners were excellent, and Stella Artois (a Belgian lager) was served on the flights between London and Berlin. Yes people, you can enjoy beer without getting drunk. I've found that it really enriches the dining experience, and just the experience of life in general.
